Mendonça,Leandro de Freitas; Granato,Ítalo Stefanine Correia; Alves,Filipe Couto; Morais,Pedro Patric Pinho; Vidotti,Miriam Suzane; Fritsche-Neto,Roberto.
ABSTRACT Maize plants can be N-use efficient or N-stress tolerant. The first have high yields in favorable environments but is drastically affected under stress conditions; whereas the second show satisfactory yields in stressful environments but only moderate ones under optimal conditions. In this context, our aim was to assess the possibility of selecting tropical maize lines that are simultaneously N-stress tolerant and N-use efficient and check for differences between simultaneous selection statistical methods. Sixty-four tropical maize lines were evaluated for Nitrogen Agronomic Efficiency (NAE) and Low Nitrogen Tolerance (LNTI) response indices and two per se selection indices, Low Nitrogen Agronomic Efficiency (LNAE) and Harmonic Mean of Relative...

The objective of this study was to compare early selection in sugarcane families through the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) and simulated individual best linear unbiased prediction (BLUPIS) procedures. We tested 80 full-sib families in an incomplete block experimental design. Statistical analyses were performed using the mixed model methodology. The following traits were determined from the first rattoon: tons of stalks per hectare (TSH), percentage of soluble solids w/w in the juice (Brix), and tons of brix per hectare (TBH). Variance components were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood (REML), and the genotypic values of the families were predicted by BLUP and BLUPIS. The BLUPIS procedure suggested the selection of 30 families with a total...

Estimating variance components in Stata AgEcon
Marchenko, Yulia V..
This article gives a brief overview of the popular methods for estimating variance components in linear models and describes several ways to obtain such estimates in Stata for various experimental designs. The article’s emphasis is on using xtmixed to estimate variance components. Prior to Stata 9, loneway could be used to estimate variance components for one-way random-effects models. For other experimental designs, variance components could be computed manually using saved results after anova. The latter approach is viable but requires tedious computations for complicated experimental designs. Instead, as of Stata 9, variance components are easily obtained by using xtmixed.

Genetic parameters of agronomic characters in Panicum maximum hybrids R. Bras. Zootec.
Braz,Thiago Gomes dos Santos; Fonseca,Dilermando Miranda da; Jank,Liana; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de; Martuscello,Janaina Azevedo; Simeão,Rosangela Maria.
This study was carried out with the objective of estimating the genetic parameters of agronomic traits in Panicum maximum hybrids. Genotypes obtained from the crosses between the sexual plants S10 and S12 and cultivars Tanzania and Mombasa were evaluated. The design was an incomplete blocks design with two replicates (clones) and 33 blocks. Each block was constituted by three lines or plots with nine plants each, which were evaluated in six harvests. All the characters presented low broad sense heritabilities for both the individual harvest and for the mean of harvests and a large difference between the heritability and the individual repeatability coefficient, which may be due to the high permanent environmental variance, mainly for forage dry matter and...

Meta-analyses of experimental data in the animal sciences R. Bras. Zootec.
St-Pierre,Normand Roger.
In certain areas of animal research, such as nutrition, quantitative summarizations of literature data are periodically needed. In such instances, statistical methods dealing with the analysis of summary data (generally from the literature) must be used. These methods are known as meta-analyses. The implementation of a meta-analysis is done in several phases. The first phase defines the study objectives and identifies the criteria for selecting prior publications to be used in the construction of the database. Publications must be scrupulously evaluated for their quality before being entered into the database. During this phase, it is important to carefully encode each record with pertinent descriptive attributes (experiments, treatments, etc.) to serve as...

R-environment package for regression analysis PAB
Arnhold,Emmanuel.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to develop a package in the R environment for automating and facilitating the regression analysis. Named easyreg, the package offers five functions. The er1 function performs analyses in 13 models, including linear, nonlinear, and mixed models. The er2 function considers the lack of fit in the analyses and in the following designs: completely randomized, randomized complete block, Latin squares, and repeated Latin squares. The regplot function generates graphics; the bl function estimates two-segment models; and the regtest function tests the equality of parameters and the identity of the models. These functions allow of a great number of analyses and confer practicality and versatility to the regression analysis.
